World Cup Fever!

Yay! The long awaited holiday has finally arrived. Time to get some decent rest, connect back to the world and enjoy the world cup vibe. (⌒0⌒)/~~　

So what am I up to this during this 1st half of the year? hmm, probably the same as last year's simple routine - study all day long. hmm...so nothing much to write in this blog really..lol

University started earlier this year due to the world cup that will take place tomorrow (Yay!). In this semester, we continued with 2nd year engineering mathematics in which we deal with lots of surface integrations which most of us find more interesting than last year's topics.

In chemistry, we studied physical chemistry & spectroscopy. My favourite section is on spectroscopy where we learned the methods to identify an unknown substance using UV, MRI, etc. - similar to techniques used in CSI - a section I didn't fell asleep in :P On monday afternoons, we have long lab experiments (；´Д`) and a lab report due in a week after. For this 1st semester, I've learnt to do research and write reports more efficiently. I'm really bad at writing...＿l￣l○

My next course is called Material and Energy Balances. This course is very important since it is the most fundamental tool we need to use. Although it is "fundamental", it wasn't easy at all. I think I put the most effort into this course and I'm sure it is a good investment! (＾ー＾)/

The other 2 courses consist of a design and a lab course. No doubt these 2 courses will be my lowest marks, but I've learnt the most out of these 2. Again, my writing skills have improved!

We did a very interesting project this semester about Eskom (SA's electricity supplier) new power plant in Medupi. We were to investigate the feasibility of installing a FGD (Flue Gas Desulfurization) system into their power plant. At this moment, this coal power plant's SO2 emission does not meet both national and international legislation standards so Eskom plans to install FGD. This was the first time we dealt with a real life problem (even though we made ridiculous assumptions along the way), this project clearly identified my weakness in writing. I need to do some reading this holiday. (・_・;)　

During our mid-semester break, a bunch of us went for a hike up Table Mountain via skeleton gorge. The whole hike took us 8 hrs! I was totally worn out afterwards but it was a good exercise nonetheless. Now we are just left with Lion's Head to conquer to complete the Three Peaks of Cape Town.

This is a quote from a encouragement card that Cindy-jie gave me 4 years ago. I think it's a good time to look at it again just before studies commence!

I must admit that I'm quite nervous about the studies to come, the early mornings and late nights that awaits. More courage is needed at this moment, but I guess everything will work out fine once the stress starts rolling in? (；´Д`)

I need to maintain the positive attitude that I had last year, try not to fall asleep that often and focus on understanding. Most importantly, I must remember to drink lots of water so as not to fall sick! ＿|￣|○

Not matter what difficulties are lying ahead, I need to keep moving forward....

...and dig my head into whatever I'm doing! (⌒0⌒)/~~　

I'm hope I can receive good news from my bursary applications, that'll make 2010 a really good year! Lets work hard! Yeah!!! (o＾∇＾o)ノ

What a relief that my 1st year finally comes to an end, especially on a positive note. I'm glad that all the hard work has paid off. Now it's the time to take a break! Woohoo!

Our plant visit to SAB (South African Breweries). It is the only brewery in SA that uses spring water to make beers.

An engineer giving us a tour explained to us about the entire process plant and how beer is made.

This is the 1st real-life heat exchanger our class has seen!

Bottling section! They have cameras made by NASA to spot differences on the bottles that is moving very fast on the production line, making sure every bottles are perfect. It's amazing!

Open bar at the end of the tour. Free drinks to everyone! Our prof started drinking so others joined.......we wrote physics straight after the tour. >_<

At the end of the 3rd term, we were taught about valves & pressure and so we had a competition that requires us to control valves to move a bearing/ball around the pipes twice. The group that can complete the race in the shortest time will be exempted from doing the write-up. It requires lots of team work. My group was unfortunate to get knocked out of finals cos our bearing became stuck at one of the valves! It was really fun afterall.

Nearly 2 hrs in the chemistry labs, we made our first aspirin! Not edible!

There's birds everywhere in campus! They build nests in classroom and sometimes find food there too...

Right now I'm thinking of possible companies which I can apply for a bursary. I would like to work in cape town but many big companies are based in Johannesburg...oh man, I'll avoid that place if possible! I'm also thinking what's my specific interest? oil, mining, water.....
So far, the following companies offers bursaries to permanent resident:

2) Anglo American (Mining)
3) Sappi (Pulp & Paper)
4) De Beers (Diamond)
5) SAB (Breweries)

Yesterday, I happen to bump into a technician working in Sappi so I asked many questions about the company and such. Seems like a good company. hmm...

argh...let me just enjoy my holiday so long. :P
